Wednesday 17th
Wake up too late of course, arrive a half hour after the other 3, for an interview with Danish magazine GAFFA – but one cup of coffee and my mouth runs off as usual.
We haven't got any perspective, let alone distance, to the album at the moment, still we fake being clever – good thing we've tried it before, otherwise this bizarre setting, would get the best of us...The journalist Jens JAM is a veteran like us, and knows us from earlier interviews, so we're not afraid of opening up - an otherwise hardlearned mistake, when you stick your neck out after a long time in the recording studio.
One meeting leads to the other, and the BIG meeting begins: the managing director, the labelmanager, the Swedish A'N'R representative, the Danish A'N'R rep., the radiopromoter, the 4 of us and producer Joshua – all in one room to decide which 12 songs to put on the album, which song is going to be the first radiosingle and which songs become bonustracks for iTunes, for Germany and for Japan...We try to get a vote on the songs that we fear might not end up on the album – everybody shouts, listens on laptops, listens on the big stereo, walks in and out of the room and generally just tries to get their own point across – Kill your darlings is suddenly not a clichι – today it feels very real!!, even your most treasured songs are not safe, and in the end we have to compromise and put 13 tracks on the album. "House Of Fun" – ends up becoming the bonustrack...and then the big one: The single; a song the radio wants to play, impresses instantly, tells you D-A-D has moved forward...a song you will whistle while riding your bike, taking the subway, driving your car or doing chores at home – not a small feat, and we need it out there by October 6!! – Arguments flies like bullets; should it be "Nightmares In The Daytime" or should it be the titletrack – everybody's got an opinion, not even the 4 of us are totally in unison either way, but after some loud 45 minutes, everybody lands on the same spot: "Monster Philosophy" – Many of us kind of knew it already, but it is an important decision and now we're all in the same boat.– ...So off to the radios and up on the webpage for free streaming on the 5th!
Luckily, the artwork is getting on nicely, everybody is all for the brilliant idea for the frontcover, so what's left to discuss is whether to have a "Special Luxury Edition" – A photographer went with us to the studio in New Jersey, and while we recorded the basic tracks, she took around a 1000 pictures – so a "the making of.."photobook and maybe the bonustrack is in serious consideration....
