True Believer: Memorable Moments

Thomas Winandy

This story is short.

My first son, where born 2 months before time (premature).

In the car, one my way home from the hospital, after the first week there. I heard this song on the  CD player “I’am a little cloud, coloured pink and gray …”

I was “marked” for life.

My most magic D-A-D related moment was the time when D-A-D played at a local hawker's market?!
I'm originally from the countryside, but moved to Copenhagen three years ago. Last year in the late summertime I had to go home to the countryside to visit some friends for a long weekend. I arrived at Thursday afternoon and the weather was great! In the evening my friends wanted to go to a local hawker's market which usually is a bit of a drag. Sure, there is a lot of local young single farmers and cheap beer but it's nothing special. Since it's a very small community you always meet a lot of people that you know, so I gave it a chance. Anyway we went to the market and we got seated in the largest beer-tent and had a few beers. As time went by, more and more familiar people entered the tent and suddenly a speaker said:" LET'S WELCOME D-A-D!" I could hardly believe it! Here I was, bored out of my mind in the middle of nowhere and then my favourite band of all times came to my rescue!! Free concert and free beer from the lovely young farmers!! Do I need to tell you how happy I was that summer night in the countryside?

The best D-A-D moment EVER !

My brother and I had our best D-A-D moment, when we back in 2002 made the first D-A-D convention ever.

We thought it could be great to make such an event, before a D-A-D show here in Odense.

During the day, at the convention it was possible to buy Official D-A-D merchandise, records, cd´s, posters, book´s etc, meet other fans and listen to great D-A-D music

And to top it all, all members of the band showed up for a signing session, so all True Believers could meet  D-A-D and get diff. stuff signed !

To make an event like this, is the most magic D-A-D-related moment we ever had as fans !

My most magic D-A-D moment

My moment takes place in 2006 at Varde Open Air.
I had not yet had the pleasure of meeting anyone from the band, but that changed.
Before the concert I took a walk outside the venue areas. Here I spot Laust in the center of a big crowd sitting at a table at an outside restaurant. I turn my head but my feet keep on walking so I almost knock down a waiter in my attempt to convince my mind that it really is Laust I have just seen. I burst through his follow of people and ask for an autograph (well knowing that I have neither pen nor paper. I run in to the hotel and grasps the first the best waiter I can find and asks I can borrow a pen. Through some serious convincing I get her pen, now all I need is something to write on. The 50 kroner bill I have in my pocket has got to do the job. A small sacrifice for my first autograph. Just an hours before I only had a 500 kroners. I get the autograph, a picture with me and Laust and take of thinking that now my day can’t possibly get any better.
D-A-D played a great concert but they had not thrown a single thing out to the audience doing the entire concert. No picks, no drumsticks no nothing. So of cause at the end of the concert people start to reach towards the stage in a grapping motion in an attempt to get something. I think that if I am going to get anything out of this I need to deal with this in another way than the others in front. Instead I get eye contact with Cobber, smiles and make a motion like, come here and reach my arm forward with my open palm. Cobber walks over to me and places his pick right in my palm takes a new one and continues to play like nothing had happen.
And just like that my day got so much better than I thought possible.

It was Friday the 7th of February; winter 1992.

My best friend Christian and I went to High School in Hillerod, 40 km north of Copenhagen. Disneyland After Dark - as we still called them - played in Fyns Forum in Odense. Together with a third friend, who we chose because – unlike us – he had a driver’s license and a car, we had decided to split the cost for the 200 km. drive and the ferry ticket to experience D-A-D on their Riskin’ It All tour. Along with the 120 kr for the ticket, it was almost 500 kr in all - a month’s salary for a high school kid at the time - so the trip was a pretty big event for us.

Across the hatch of the red Citroën 2CV we had written TRUE BELIEVERS, and the new album was copied to a cassette tape so we could learn the lyrics on the way. We met Friday after school, bought beers and began our loud crusade heading south down that dusty road. We had to drive very fast to make the ferry departure at 6 pm. Then - after 1½ hours ride - the engine suddenly stopped in the middle of a very deserted highway. Sadly it was not an absurd joke when our driver told us the reason: “there is no fuel left…”

We waited on the highway for two hours and then another two hours for the next ferry - with no chance of making the concert at 20:00. When finally at 22 we entered the concert hall, all lights were off. A second later, the spotlight unveiled a giant sofa with D-A-D exploding to the tune of Bad Craziness. We were exhausted but exalted. The concert was unsurpassed. The Binzers were exploding and Stig surprised the audience by playing on his two-string 30 feet up from the right tower of loudspeakers. After the show we met the band at a local bar and got their thumbs up when we told them about our trip. I still have the ticket from my best concert ever.

My best D-A-D related experince must be during the club tour in may 2005. We went to signing in Stereo Studio, came early enough to Musikcafeen to have dinner next to the band and after the amazing show in the tight atmosphere, Torleif signed the D-A-D skatebord and drew a large Helpyourselfish...

My D.A.D moment is taking place in Phoenix, Arizona back in 1990. I was an exchange student in the US. When I left Denmark in 1989 D.A.D had just released there "no fuel left" album. I saw their show at Grand Palace in Odense.
Living in Phoenix for a year gave me many oppertunities to see great concerts ( Cure, Aerosmith etc). One day I read in the local paper that a Danish band called D.A.D played in Phoenix. I was very excited and bought the tickets right away. I had been following Warners promotion of the band in the local recordstore, huge billboards, posters and promo cd´s from the local radiostation.
On the night of the concert, my hostbrother and I drove out to the concert place. Huge disapointment, the concert had been cancelled. We got back to the house. I read in the paper that the concert had been moved to another part of town far away. It was too late to drive out there. The next day I rode my bicykle out where the concert had been going on. Outside was a huge sign saying DAD playing tonight. I went in and talked to the people working in the bar. They told me all aboute the show, and said that it was awsom. They gave me a poster. Their story about the show and having americans telling me about my favorit band was special.
Allthough I didnt get to see the boys playing in my "hometown" I still think this is a fun and moment in my many years as a huge DAD fan.
I have a picture of me infront of the bar with the huge sign in the background a great memory.

I’ve been a fan of D-A-D since I heard an interview with one of them in the radio in ’86 or ‘87. It was in Danish radio’s P4 and had a lot of ”Fly me to the moon”’s in it. At some point “Trucker” was played and I was sold. I recorded the song from the radio and began listening to it.

It turned out that my sister already had been to a concert or two with D-A-D and when she heard that I played the song, she told me I shouldn’t play it because it was her music (and I believe it still is – for her wedding she arranged that the first dance went directly into “Everything glows”…).

Back then I used to study the covers while I listened to the albums. I liked the lyrics with those small artifacts here and there, and I loved the I’s and Y’s so much I copied the style and I still write those letters that way nowadays.

In  2001 I went to a tv series company soccer contest where I drank a lot of free beer and enjoyed the nice summer day. At some point I spotted Torleif at the other side of the soccer lane and I felt that it would be total inappropriate if I went over to him and declare myself a giant D-A-D-fan, so I didn’t.

At the after party I decided around midnight that I have had enough beer for the day and it was time to go home. On my way out I passed Torleif and I couldn’t stand the temptation and I excused myself for interrupting and told him I really recognized him as being the 5th band member and I wrote I’s and Y’s the way I do because of those covers back then. Torleif actually listened to what I said and said “thanks I appreciate that” or something like that, and then I left, found my bike and headed towards home.

Unfortunately I made a nasty crash on my bike and reached home a week later when I left the hospital :-P

My most magic D-A-D - related moment was actually at my first concert with you guys, at “Grøn koncert” 2008. I know that it isn’t a really big thing for you guys, but for me, it was like the entire word had come to a standstill! I had eye contacts (mostly with Jacob and Laust) with you guys!!!! (ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRHHHHH) I know that you have heart this many times, but you’re the BEST band I ever had known! And just to listen to my favourite band live, after so many months knowing you guys, was so fantastic!

For me it was like, Laust and I were agreeing on, that I could have his drumstick! And when he was up at the “ufo” he throws the drumstick to me (I got it!). I know it sounds silly, but for me, it was even bigger than if god was standing just next to me!

Damn, every entire song, gave me goose bumps (gåsehud)! So good are your songs! You're so well to have contact with your audience! You guys sure don’t remember me, but at Næstved, Grøn koncert I had a D-A-D towel, and was standing in the front of the stage :D! I LOVE YOU AND YOUR MUSIC SO **** MUCH!<3 ..

- writtin by your biggest fan (that’s sure what everyone writes ) Galina, 13 year old (SOON 14 – its really important to know :D!!)

My most magic D-A-D-related moment happened in my freshment year of high school (gymnasium) in 2006. I was just started on Varde Gymnasium and the only people I knew was my brother, Gabriel, and my friend from prep. school, Tobias. After about a month I started a band with 4 other guys; my friend Tobias on drums, two guys called mads and kasper on guitar, a guy called Amir on vocal and me on bass guitar. Then there was this event on the school were the students could go up on a stage in front of the whole school and do a number. We decided to play Everything Glows by D-A-D, of course. When we were rehearsing we talked about placing the bass amp behind the drum set and I should go up on the bass amp and play in the middle of the song. So we placed the bass amp behind the drum set, just in case, I would do it. The day came and we got up on the stage and we started to play. Most of us did not really no anyone so it was like playing a reel concert in front of an audience. In the middle of the song, right before the song raised a level i got up on the bass amp and play. When people saw that I stood on the bass amp they went crazy. I got the most amazing ovation I've ever had. It felt so good standing on the bass amp and play, and it was really funny. The weirdest thing was the after reaction. Suddenly everybody knew who I was and people I've never talked to before just got up to me and talked to me like we were best friends... The most amazing, and weirdest, experience.

It was July 18 -97 in Svedala that I saw D-A-D life for the first time with my friend Robert. The evening began with that we biked from Malmoe to Svedala, without intending on that buses go to Svedala, he he. After one hour cycling we were there. Well in front so, we searched after a place to camp on that the result became a 20 minutes' cycling back to the concert. The concert was as a dream comes true, we have of course seen our idols, with it’s after dark in the end, has not been happier. On the road back was we so fond that we had taken ourselves here, very hoarse of all singing. We had with ourselves hot dogs on a glass tin and ravioli on plate tin, the problems began here. Without tin opener so could we not open the ravioli, a stone become (tin opener) with conclusion that we had ravioli all over on clothing and tents with a lot of laughter. We were 16 and 17 years old at the time. Now we laugh at this when we talk about this. This is my most special memory with D-A-D and my friend Robert.

Mads Boesen

In somthing about 2004, "Ønskefronden" asked D-A-D if they wanted to play on Odder gymnasium. it was this boys (who just survived cancer) biggest whish. and fortunetly they agreed. I remenber the whole concert as very intimate. we were only 250 people, and I was up in the front, almost touching them. The time was standing still, especially when they played "Reconstrucdead". I just remember Jesper going totally crazy. never seen a better D-A-D concert. plus, Jesper agreed, very friendly to give me his autograf. That was big.

Back in 2000, when they came out with EG, I was only 13 years old. Two years before my dad has surprised me at Christmas with a signed Psychopatico album, from the midnight release, which my parents had denied me to go to, cause I was too young. This time I convinced my dad, that he had to go with me, to GUF to the midnight release. But to stand at Nørrebro (think it was) at midnight, for a little kid was kind a weird, cause everywhere were grown ups with tattoos of Molly, the Helpyourselfish-Fish etc, and there I was I my ugly green jacket and my dad. You couldn't help feeling very very small!  BUT before we got in, a truck came by at midnight and stopped right in front of GUF, and there they were, D-A-D and they began playing Evil Twin and 2-3 other songs, until the cops stopped them for disturbing the neighbours. But Jesper just looked at the band and said: "one more Chorus". Awesome! But as I was at the entrance I couldn't see anything from the mass of people in front of us. My dad tried to lift me, but couldn't hold me all by himself all the time, so suddenly, two guys who had been talking a bit to us, cause they thought I was kind a young to be there, offered to help my dad. One of them just grapped me and put me on his shoulders and from there I could see the band play the songs, while I was sitting on the shoulders of a total stranger, who I had only talked to very little, and now they almost seemed like friends asking me if I was okay while my dad just stood next to us, enjoying the show as well! And afterwards I met the band for the first time J That is a night I'll never forget, with two very kind strangers, my DAD and D-A-D

I think everyone has a very special moment with d-a-d in it. But in my case it is Roskilde Festival 2005.

I´ve been a fan of the band for many many years, but never had the chance to see them at Roskilde Festival. But in 2005 they were playing at the orange stage. Me my boyfriend and our friends stood in line at the stage for about 4 hours. And finally the time came where the guards would let us in. I managed to get a spot right at the fence, so the stage was literally 4 metres from me. WOW...i was in heaven..we still had about half an hours wait before the band would come on stage. Suddenly my boyfriend started to talk about how our relationship had been going through the last 3½ years. How much he loved me and that he had never had this kind of feelings before. And that was when it happened...he asked me to marry him..right there in front of the orange stage, 10 min before my all time favourite band came on stage. I was stunned.... he stood there looking at me with his big brown beautiful eyes, waiting for me to react. All of a sudden the conferencier came on and started presenting the band, and of course my boyfriend got very impatient, i came to my senses and of course i said yes. The concert was GREAT and lets just say d-a-d will allways have a special place in my heart.

The date is October 30, 2005. D-A-D play Aalborg Kongres & Kultur Center with the new Magtens korridorer as warm up. I will attend the concert with one of my friends. He dragged me there, despite me insisting on that it wouldn't be anything for me. However he persuaded me. Half an hour before we would meet a big quarrel between me and my father broke out. I thought my father's drug addiction had come to dominate too much, but he didnt't think that a 14-year-old boy should interfere with that! I went away, slamming the door, and I don't think I have ever been that angry before! I was mad and on my way to a concert I actually didn't want to attend, but you don't make your friends disappointed! We arrived to the concert and I was definitely not in the mood for such things. When D-A-D started playing Lawrence Of Suburbia I shut up and stopped whining, but I still couldn't get it out of my mind! Then Jacob and Jesper were standing in the middle of the stage, with one guitar each, and they started playing "Laugh 'n' 1/2". Jesper sang two words and then the audience took over. The two brothers were standing there playing, while the audience sang. Jesper had a big smile on his face and in that moment I forgot EVERYTHING! Everybody stood there singing and Jesper's smile was so contagious that I just couldn't keep on being angry. That day I became a big D-A-D fan, and I still am!

Today I am 16 years old, and every time I have enough and I need a break, I listen to "Laugh 'n' 1/2". When I hear it I remember so clearly  the atmosphere and Jesper's smile, and suddenly everything becomes a bit easier to handle. I'm convinced that I will never forget this memory!

I have been a DAD fan since the mid 80s. The music has always been very important for me. Some years ago I had a hard time in my life. I was deeply depressed for several months. DAD visited Odense on the first tour with Laust. My friend brought me to the concert. When they played Jacketless in December and the snow was falling from the ceiling, I had a strong feeling that this was the first time in many months that I was really happy and peaceful. This moment will always be remembered.
D-A-D rules!

Allan Kristoffersen

My biggest D-A-D moment needs a little explanation.

A few years ago, D-A-D came to Arenaen in Århus DK to give concert. The concert was the one where D-A-D the same evening received an Honour achievement in Copenhagen.

Well, I was working in Arenaen, serving beer for the audience durring the concert. The only downside to the job, was the beer stand was OUTSIDE the concert hall. That was not a perfect arrangement for a big D-A-D fan! So how to deal with this problem. I mangaged to convince my colleague in the beer stand, that I could see that concert but come back everytime there where customers. No problem, I could do that. It was a deal!
The hall had doors on both sides, so I only had to concentrate on the one side where the beer stand was located. But still, god dame people were thirsty that evening. As a result I was running back a forward from the concert and the beer stand like a crazy man every time I spotted people moving away from the concert. Believe me when I say, there were a LOT of people.
A couple of times I got blinded by the show and the music from the stage so that I got forgot I was worrking, whick resulted in a long line at the beer stand when I returned and a very angry colleague. Luckilly he eventually forgave me though.

I'm sure it was a special concert for the boys, and it was very special for me as well. I heard great music, got in better shape running back and forward and I got paied doing it! What a great combination of job, hobby and getting fit.

Louise Andersen

I was attending 5 grade in school and my older brother was a big fan of Disneyland After Dark. As you do in that age, I looked up to him so I began listening to the great rock band as well – and got a bolo tie to match Stig. For a year I listened to my classmates telling me “what is that you are listening to, you are strange, that is no good etc.” But I could not help my self, Disneyland After Dark was the band for me, but still it was very hard to listen to all the bullying from my classmates for more than a year.

But then the magic happened! The guys in the class got totally crazy about the song “I won’t cut my hair”, they all started asking me if they could borrow my records, suddenly my tie was cool and I was a cool girl – my life as a 12 years old girl changed!

Now 20 years later, I have not missed at least one concert on the tours and I just got my new ipod today with the engraving on the back “D-A-D true believer”!

Ronny Bannerjee

It was back in October 2005 when we, my wife Bonnie and I, went to a D-A-D concert in KB-hallen.
My wife was pregnant and inside her tummy was our little unborn son at his first concert.
During the concert we agreed that his name should be Laust, because we knew he got it
So Laust Romeo was born on June 1st. 2006 and he loves to dance and sing and pretty soon he´ll be hitting some drums
That´s a magic D-A-D moment for every day

How D-A-Ds songs helps me "surviving" my job ;-)

I work as a night watch in a hotel. Overall I am quite satisfied with my job - especially the contact with all the different types of guest that comes to stay here.

Of course working as a night watch has made "Sleeping my day away" one of my favourite songs ;-)

But lately I have had a hard time on my job, and then it feels good to be able to blow off steam – and the most perfect song for that is of course: "Jihad"! - The fact that the hotel is a Seaman's Mission Hotel makes it even better ;-)

Recently I have also discovered my favourite D-A-D quote:

"To be childish keeps you young, but to be treated like a child
Makes you old too soon - Haven't spent time with Jesus to know if that's true"

This - combined with all the great D-A-D songs - really keeps me being happy and childish ;-) And when my boss is being unreasonable I don't give a damn, I just shake my head and think that he's being overmuch ;-)

Colin Betts

My name is Colin Betts. I have been a fan of D-A-D since 1990 when I first saw the video for Sleeping My Day Away. Through friends and some good luck, I have been able to keep up with their music and song, even receiving some very special Christmas cards along the way.

But it was not until a special show in Luxembourg on June 7, 2008 that I finally realized my dream of seeing the band live. From the opening of "Isn't that Wild", through the entire set, to after the show and meeting Stig, Jesper and Jacob. It was an amazing adventure in a terrific city.

You see, I'm from Canada and happened to have made vacation plans to London, England that coincided with the concert date. So one airfare and a hotel room later, I'm living the dream. Yes, I was in fact the loony who gave the "loonie" (a gold-coloured Canadian dollar with a picture of a loon) to Stig after the show.

The vacation was also a chance to see my dear friend, Peter, a native of Danmark and a fellow fan. I first met Peter in 1991, when he arrived in Canada as an exchange student. We spent a lot of time talking about our favourite band, and even gave our "bad breath's kiss to our pillow pet" with an airband rendition at school. We tried to remain close since then.

Peter unfortunately couldn't join me for the concert. And as much as I would love love love to be at the screening of "True Believer", it just isn't going to happen. So I tell you this tale of chance and friendship, in the hopes of a pass to share with my friend, Peter, from the other side of the pond.

Merete Bang Selsted

I had been looking forward to the great Wigwam Tour all summer, and most of all to listen to my favorite band D-A-D. But then during my vacation I accidently heard on the radio that the whole tour was off! The summer was ruined and I just looked sadly at my worthless ticket.

But luck found us afterall, my friend and I went to the making up concert at 10-øren at Amager. The atmosphere was great and I knew the day would end in a big bang - D-A-D closing the event.
And we really were enjoying, singing, clapping, and yelling, it was fantastic! But the climax of the evening really came when Jesper shouted out "Det er de rigtige der er her i dag", we all went crazy and everything went to a higher level that day.

Kenn L. Schjødt

I persuaded my wife to attend the "Grøn Koncert" in Næstved with me
this summer. We arrived late as we only came for D-A-D, even though we
had to endure most of Aqua, in our quest to get to the front. When
Aqua ended, most of the Aqua fans disappeared, and we got a place in
front row, in front of Stiggen.

It was a great koncert, but my most magic moment, was when my wife
actually caught one of the drumsticks Laust Sonne threw to the
audience and then gave it to me with a smile. Man...you got to love
someone you been married to for 16 years, when she surprises you like
this.

The drumstick has a honorary place on my memorabilia shelf, it still
tickles down my spine, thinking I was one of 6-8 people out of 27.000
that got a drumstick, and my wife caught it for me.

Thanks to my wife and to D-A-D

Josefine Kristensen

My most magic moment with D-A-D, is my first live concert with them ever.
I felt in love with their music this summer, so i'm one of the new in the crowd of D-A-D fans, but definitely already one of their biggest!

26 th. of July and the 'Dirty Fairytale' was about to start.
I was standing all in front when the concert was about to start. The scene was dark, but suddenly a longhairy man came running on the scene, screaming: "What the hell is happening to you, Næsteveeeddd!?" It was JESPER! Very cool and with an energie who kicked the audience right in the face. Laust came running with his drumsticks in the air, Mr. Jacob came walking all relaxed and with an elegance who is a king worthy. And last but not least Stig, with golden hotpants! - If this is what it looks like when the world gonna ends, then it's allrigth!

I was one big smile when they start playing. I were standing rigth in front of Cobber, an as a giutarplayer myself, it was so magic to watch his magnificent way to play. Everytime he started playing a new solo I felt like flying to another planet. I have realized how difficult it is to learn to play the cool riffs and it really takes a lot of practice, but if I one day could become just half as good as him, then it's all worth it.

As the show goes by, we were standing like a bunch of soft dogs: D-A-D were the kings and all we could do was to hand ourselves over to this magic evening. They totaly blowed us away. I didn't thougth that it could be more wild, when laust and his drums suddenly flew over the crowd. So unbelievable and so much bad craziness! Everybody was yelling " Come on Laust, we know you've got it".

I'll never forget the feeling of being a part of this concert. I've never felt so much energie at the same time, as i did at that concert. And i'm looking so much forward to Forum the 7 th. of March!

D-A-D makes you feel so high on rock 'n' rool and they are a big part of my inspiration. Their songs are some of the best we've got in the rock world, and remember there's always a D-A-D song to everything in life, whether you need a Laugh 'n' a ½ or A Kiss Between The Legs !

Søren Bonderup

Grøn Koncert, Aalborg 2008

It was the 20th of July where I for the first time was attending a concert with D-A-D. The day started off very well with a few well playing “heat-up bands” because ofcourse D-A-D was going to close the concert! Some of the “heat-up bands” were Magtens Korridorer, Hej Matematik, Aqua (and a few more or less unknown bands ex. NIk & Jay). It was raining nearly all day but fortunately I had my green umbrella so I was nearly dry. An hour before D-A-D was going to take in the scene one of my friends went home because he became ill. Then I gave my umbrella to my friend because I knew that when D-A-D started it was going to be crazy and  my other friends and I were going to enjoy D-A-D like we have never enjoyed anything before. But 15 minutes before D-A-D started it started raining again and I got wet. BUT then D-A-D took in the scene and I forgot how wet I really was. It was an amazing concert the best concert I have ever been to. Suddenly while they were playing one of their famous numbers Laust suddenly came floating over the audience while he kept on playing his drums. I have never seeen anything like that before and this concert will never be forgotten!
